|Mig. About ten years old.|
Mig's story starts in "Night ..." [link]
... continues in " ... or Day ..." [link]
...and concludes here...
Her first Christmas season with us, we noticed this strange behavior. Each night, Mig would perch on the high shelf against the garden wall and peer into the next-door neighbour's. It took several nights of observation before it hit us that she was looking right into the neighbours' window. What on earth was keeping her attention? One night, I sneaked to where she perched and realised that in her line of vision were the twinkling Christmas lights in the tree in our neighbours' living room!
We cried upon the realization of the significance of that behaviour - at her previous home, she must have looked in on the lights and festivities that she couldn't be a part of. We promised her we'll get her her own Christmas lights the next year (we didn't - and still don't - celebrate Christmas in our household and had no lights then).
The following year, we got her the lights. But by then, she was so secure in our love that she didn't need our lights, nor our neighbours' - no more perching and peering into the neighbours' !
